Non-pharmacological techniques appear to be more effective than placebo and probably as effective as pharmacological treatments in preventing post-operative nausea and vomiting.

A systematic review including 19 RCTs with a total of 1 679 subjects was abstracted in DARE. The invasive techniques assessed included manual rotation of acupuncture needles, electrical stimulation of needle) and the non-invasive interventions included electrical stimulation and acupressure. Non-pharmacologic techniques were better than placebo (RR = 0.40, 95% CI 0.23 to 0.71 for preventing nausea, RR = 0.47, 95% CI 0.34 to 0.64 for preventing and vomiting). Non-pharmacological techniques were similar to antiemetics in 3 studies.

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by imprecise results (few patients and wide confidence intervals).
