Erysipelas, an acute, febrile, serious infection commonly affects leg. The infection is almost always caused by group A pyogenic streptococci. Fever may arise very rapidly to a high level, the patient may be confused, the leg is swollen, red, often haemorrhagic/purpuric and bullous lesions may develop. The therapy of choice is intravenous penicillin G. There is a tendency for recurrence. Check toe clefts for tinea and other possible dermatoses.
