Terlipressin is more effective than placebo in reducing mortality in esophageal variceal bleeding.
A Cochrane review included 7 studies with a total of 443 subjects. Terlipressin was associated with a statistically significant reduction in all cause mortality compared to placebo (RR 0.66, 95% CI 0.49 to 0.88). According to studies with limited power, there was no significant difference between terlipressin and somatostatin or terlipressin and endoscopic treatment.
