Antibiotic prophylaxis for forceps delivery may reduce the incidence of endomyometritis.

A Cochrane review included 1 study with 393 women undergoing forceps delivery. It reported 7 women with endomyometritis in the group given no antibiotic and none in prophylactic antibiotic group (2 gm of cefotetan ) (RR 0.07, 95% CI 0.00 to 1.21). There was no difference in the length of hospital stay between the two groups (MD 0.09 days, 95% CI -0.23 to 0.41).

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by study quality (unclear allocation concealment and lack of blinding) and by imprecise results (wide confidence intervals).
