Trachyonychia may be secondary to alopecia areata, lichen planus, psoriasis; however, it may often affect all 20 nails ("twenty nail dystrophy") without any evident concomitant skin disease. Usually the affection is seen more easily in fingernails. There is no "best therapy", but oral biotin may be tried.
