The prevalence of coeliac disease appears to be up to 1% according to serologic screening studies.
McMillan et al studied 5 420 adult persons aged 15 - 65 in Northern Ireland by determining serum IgA antibodies against gliadin, reticulin and endomysium. Gliadin antibodies were detected in 5.7%, endomysium antibodies in 1.2%, and reticulin antibodies in 0.8%. Of 113 patients with positive serology, 51 had a biopsy taken . Of them 13 had coeliac disease, giving a prevalence of 0.8%
Kolho et al studied 1 070 persons (987 women) working in a university hospital. 11 persons had gliadin antibodies, and 8 had villous atrophy (prevalence 1:130).
Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by imprecise results (few outcome events).
