The results of laparoscopic surgery for repair of a perforated peptic ulcer appear to be no clinically different from those of open surgery.
A Cochrane review included 3 studies with a total of 315 subjects. There was no statistically significant differences between laparoscopic and open surgery in the proportion of abdominal septic complications (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.30 to 1.47), pulmonary complications (OR 0.52, 95% CI 0.08 to 3.55) or actual number of septic abdominal complications (OR 0.60, 95% CI 0.32 to 1.15).
Comment: The quality of evidence was downgraded by sparse data.
