Distal subungual type of onychomycosis caused by the dermatophyte T. rubrum. It is typical that the fungus affects only one or a few nails (in contrast to psoriasis for example). Very often a patient with onychomycosis first has the plantar type of tinea pedis. Oral antifungal agents are the treatment of choice for onychomycosis.
