There is no evidence of an effect of thermotherapy on objective measures of disease activity, but there are no harmful effects, and patients like it.

A Cochrane review included 7 studies with a total of 328 subjects. There was no effect on objective measures of disease activity of either ice versus control or heat versus control. In one trial, wax baths showed some benefit.

Comment: As patients enjoy thermotherapy, and there are no harmful effects, thermotherapy should be recommended as a therapy that can be applied at home as needed to relieve pain.
