Consumption of oats does not appear to cause villous atrophy in patients with coeliac disease.

In an open randomized study 40 patients with recently diagnosed coeliac disease and 52 patients with coeliac disease under treatment either consumed a diet containing oats 50 g/d or a control diet without oats. Duodenal biopsy was obtained in the beginning and end of the study. There were no differences in the degree of villous atrophy between the two groups. In patients with recently diagnosed coeliac disease the regeneration of villi was similar in both groups.

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by study quality (lack of blinding).
