Treatment of non-malignant hypertension with diuretics and adrenergic blockers does not decrease the risk of renal dysfunction.

A systematic review including 10 studies with a total of 26 521 subjects was abstracted in DARE. Drug treatments used in the primary studies consisted mostly of diuretics and adrenergic blockers; only one trial used angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. There were a total of 317 cases of renal dysfunction. Treated patients did not have a lower risk of renal dysfunction: RR 0.97 (95% 0.78 to 1.21).
