Cochrane reviews

  • Single dose dipyrone appears to have similar efficacy to other analgesics used in renal colic pain .
  • Both NSAIDs and opioids provide effective analgesia in acute renal colic, but opioids are associated with a higher incidence of adverse events, particularly vomiting. If an opioid is to be used it should not be pethidine .
  • There is no evidence on the effect of diuretics or high volume intravenous or oral fluid therapy for treating adult patients presenting with uncomplicated acute ureteric colic .
  • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) appears to be less effective for lower pole kidney stones than percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). There seems to be no difference between ESWL and retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) .
