Cochrane reviews
- Spinal manipulation therapy may have a similar effect as amitriptyline in reducing migraine headache and the effect may last longer. As compared to sham electrotherapy, SMT may be superior for reducing headache frequency, duration, and the use of pain medication .
- Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors appear to be no better than placebo for preventing migraine or tension-type headaches. For chronic tension-type headaches, SSRIs appear to be less effective than tricyclic antidepressants but have fewer side-effects .
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may relieve acute migraine headache .Acupuncture may be as effective as drug treatment in migraine prophylaxis .

- Data from observational studies suggest that migraine may be a risk factor in developing stroke .
- Single-dose parenteral dexamethasone reduces migraine recurrence within 72 hours but does not reduce the initial headache .
