Cochrane reviews
- Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors appear to be no better than placebo for preventing tension-type headaches. For chronic tension-type headaches, SSRIs appear to be less effective than tricyclic antidepressants but have fewer side-effects .
Dipyrone may be effective for episodic tension-type headache and migraine. It may carry the risk of potentially life-threatening blood disorders such as agranulocytosis .
Other evidence summaries
- Biofeedback may provide relief of tension-type headache, but may not be more effective than pharmacotherapy, physical therapy or cognitive therapy .
