Cochrane reviews

  • Provision of verbal or written information about the procedure prior to a mammogram may reduce pain and discomfort of the procedure .
  • Breast self examination is probably ineffective in screening for breast cancer .
  • Active recruitment strategies are more effective than no intervention in increasing participation in breast cancer screening .

Other evidence summaries

  • Patient reminders are effective at increasing mammography screening . The sensitivity of screening mammography based on a one-year screening interval appears to range between 83% and 95% in reported studies, and the false positive rate appears to range between 0.9% and 6.5%. . Mammography seems to increase the level of distress at least in the short term in some women .
  • Screening for ovarian cancer with CA 125 and ultrasound compared with usual care appears not to reduce ovarian cancer or total mortality, and appears to be associated with a considerable number of false-positive results and complications associated with surgery
