Cochrane reviews
- Progestins may be effective in symptomatic treatment of painful endometriosis and provide pain relief similar to danazol and GnRH agonists .
- Danazol appears to be effective in treating the symptoms and signs of endometriosis. However, its use is limited by the occurrence of androgenic side effects .
- Ovulation suppression is not effective in subfertile women with endometriosis who wish to conceive .
- Hormonal suppression in association with surgery for endometriosis may not provide any significant improvement in clinical outcomes .
- Excisional surgery for endometriomata may give more favourable outcomes than drainage and ablation and should be the favoured surgical approach .
- Hormone replacement therapy for women with endometriosis in post-surgical menopause seems to result in pain and disease recurrence, although the evidence is limited .
