Cochrane reviews
- Cyclophosphamide might possibly be more effective in reducing symptoms of neuropsychiatric involvement in SLE compared with methylprednisolone but the evidence is insufficient .
- Combined with steroids, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) appears to be as effective as cyclophosphamide in inducing remission in lupus nephritis, and is safer with a lower risk of ovarian failure .
- Combined unfractionated heparin and aspirin appear to reduce pregnancy loss significantly in women with antiphospholipid antibody or lupus anticoagulant .
- Dehydroepiandrosterone compared to placebo seems to have limited or no effect on disease activity with mild to moderate systemic lupus erythematosus, but it may slightly improve health-related quality of life .
- Fluocinonide cream seems to be more effective than hydrocortisone cream for discoid lupus erythematosus, although the evidence is insufficient. Hydroxychloroquine and acitretin may be as effective .

- Oral contraceptives appear not to increase the risk of flare, disease activity or thrombotic events in stable SLE .
- Discontinuing hydroxychloroquine medication in stabile systemic lupus erythematosus may increase the risk or relapse .
