Cochrane reviews
- Magnesium sulphate (Mg) is more effective than diazepam, phenytoin or lytic cocktail in the treatment of eclampsia .
- Advice to reduce salt intake in pregnancy appears not to prevent pre-eclampsia .
- Diuretics seem not to be effective for preventing pre-eclampsia compared to placebo or no intervention, although there is insufficient evidence from controlled trials .
- Bed rest for hypertension during pregnancy may not provide any significant benefit .
Daily rest seems to have no effect for the risk of pre-eclampsia for women with normal blood pressure, although there is limited evidence from controlled trials .
- Supplementation with vitamin C and vitamin E compared to placebo does not prevent pre-eclampsia in women at risk, and does not reduce the risk of intrauterine growth restriction, or the risk of death in the infants .."?>
- Nitric oxides is probably not effective for preventing pre-eclampsia and its complications. They appear to increase risk of headache and stopping treatment .
- There is no consistent evidence from controlled trials of the effects of exercise on prevention of pre-eclampsia and its complications .
- Antihypertensive drug therapy for mild to moderate hypertension during pregnancy reduces the risk of severe hypertension but the effects on other outcomes (risk of pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, loss of baby) are less clear .
- There is not enough evidence to guide management of women who are hypertensive postpartum or at increased risk of becoming so .
