- Commonly used anticonvulsants may be effective in controlling seizures in the neonatal period in less than half of infants, but evidence is insufficient for recommendations concerning the use of medication .
- For cessation of seizures in status epilepticus, intravenous (iv.) lorazepam may be better than iv. diazepam or iv. phenytoin. For pre-hospital treatment, intramuscular midazolam is probably at least as good as iv. lorazepam .

Clonazepam seems to be effective in stopping status epilepticus in children, although there is no evidence from controlled trials .
Fosphenytoin seems to be equally effective in the treatment of prolonged epileptic seizures in children as in adults although there is no evidence from controlled trials .
A prolonged epileptic seizure may cause brain damage .
