Cochrane reviews
- Two hours daily occlusion combined with necessary refractive correction appears to be more beneficial than refractive correction alone for strabismic amblyopia .
- For some children with unilateral refractive amblyopia, refractive correction alone may resolve the visual deficit but at present it is not possible to determine at the start of treatment which children will fall into this category. Where amblyopia persists there is some evidence that adding occlusion further improves vision .
- There is insufficient evidence on the effectiveness of botulinum toxin for the treatment of strabismus .
- Atropine penalization may provide an equal improvement in visual acuity as conventional occlusion for moderate amblyopia in children .
- Outpatient vision therapy/orthoptics appear to be more effective than home-based convergence exercises or home-based computer vision therapy/orthoptics for children with ocular convergence insufficiency .
Other evidence summaries
- There is insufficient evidence to make conclusions about the benefits of vision screening in preschool children .
