Cochrane reviews

  • Hyperbaric oxygen may reduce death rate after brain injury but does not seem to improve quality of life for survivors .
  • There is no sufficient evidence about the effects of excitatory amino acid inhibiting drugs on traumatic brain injury, but more research is pending .
  • Barbiturates appear not to reduce death or adverse neurological outcome rates for people with acute severe head injury. One in four people treated with barbiturates appears to have clinically significant hypotension, and this will offset any intracranial pressure lowering effect on cerebral perfusion pressure .

Other evidence summaries

  • Therapeutic hypothermia may reduce mortality and increase favourable neurological outcome in adults with traumatic brain injury .
