Cochrane reviews
- Delayed antibiotic prescribing strategies lead to lower rates of antibiotic use compared to immediate antibiotics in acute respiratory infections. There appears to be no difference in clinical outcomes between the strategies in cough and common cold .
- Respiratory virus spread especially in younger children may be prevented by frequent handwashing with or without adjunct antiseptics; barrier measures such as gloves, gowns, and masks with filtration apparatus; and suspicion diagnosis with isolation of likely cases .
- Daily garlic supplement may have some effect in the prevention of common cold. Adverse effects include rash and odour .
- Intranasal corticosteroids are probably not effective for the common cold in adults .
