Cochrane reviews
- Gamma-hydroxybutyrate seems to be effective for alcohol withdrawal symptoms and prevention of relapses compared to placebo, however the evidence is limited. There is severe concern about potential addiction, especially in polydrug abusers .
- There is insufficient evidence on the effectiveness and safety of anticonvulsants in alcohol withdrawal .
- Psychotropic analgesic nitrous oxide appears to be an effective treatment of the mild to moderate alcoholic withdrawal state .
