  • Gamma-hydroxybutyrate seems to be effective for alcohol withdrawal symptoms and prevention of relapses compared to placebo, however the evidence is limited. There is severe concern about potential addiction, especially in polydrug abusers .
  • Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programmes may have similar effect as other interventions for alcohol dependence. There is insufficient evidence on the effect of AA compared to no or minimal intervention .
