Cochrane reviews

  • Iodised salt appears to be an effective means of improving iodine status, but no conclusions can be made about improvements in patient-oriented outcomes, such as physical and mental development in children and mortality .
  • Levothyroxine therapy with non-suppressive doses appears to reduce the growth and volume of benign thyroid nodules in euthyroid subjects compared to placebo or no treatment.

Other evidence summaries

  • Thyroxine treatment appears to be associated with decreased nodule volume in 17% of patients .
  • Subtotal thyroidectomy appears to be the best choice of operation in patients with mild forms of Graves' disease in order to try to achieve a euthyroid state. Total thyroidectomy is probably the best operation for severe disease and large goiter in order to ensure that hyperthyroidism does not recur .
