Cochrane reviews
- Prophylactic medication is effective in the prevention of cystoid macular oedema (CMO) after cataract surgery. Topical 0.5% ketorolac is effective for the treatment of chronic CMO. Treatment of the chronic condition probably improves visual acuity .
- Day-care surgery for age-related cataract has similar clinical outcomes and postoperative complication rates as in-patient surgery, with a potential for cost saving .
- Intraocular lenses with sharp (posterior) optic edges appear to be associated with less posterior capsule opacification (PCO) than round edged lenses in the treatment of cataract .
- Sub-Tenon anaesthesia appears to provide better intra-operative pain relief, patient satisfaction and surgical satisfaction with operating conditions than topical anaesthesia for cataract surgery at a cost of slightly more painful administration .
- The use of intracameral unpreserved 1% lidocaine is an effective and safe adjunct to topical anaesthesia for phacoemulsification cataract surgery .
- Routine pre-operative testing (e.g. electrocardiography, complete blood counts and various serum measurements) does not increase the safety of cataract surgery .
