Cochrane reviews

  • Pre-operative donation of autologous blood may reduce exposure to allogeneic blood transfusion but appears to increase exposure to any transfusion .Albumin administration appears not to reduce mortality in patients with hypovolaemia or in critically ill patients with burns and hypoalbuminaemia .
  • Cell salvage appears to be effective in reducing the need for allogeneic red cell transfusion in adult elective cardiac and orthopaedic surgery .
Other evidence summaries The risk of post-operative infections seem to be increased two-fold if allogeneic blood is transfused rather than autologous blood . Leukofiltration appears to prevent most febrile reactions to red blood cell transfusions, reduce the risk of cytomegalovirus transmission, and lower the incidence of alloimmunisation .
