Cochrane reviews
- Interferon alfa-2a appears not to be beneficial for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration and may even have harmful effects .
- Vitamin E or beta-carotene supplements will not prevent or delay the onset of age-related macular degeneration .
- There is insufficient evidence on the benefits and harms of steroids with antiangiogenic properties for treating neovascular age-related macular degeneration .
- Surgical removal of choroidal neovascularisation in patients with subfoveal choroidal neovascularisation due to age-related macular degeneration does not prevent visual loss compared to observation, and the risk of developing cataract and retinal detachment increases after surgery .
- Laser photocoagulation of drusen appears no to reduce the risk of developing choroidal neovascularisation, geographic atrophy, or visual acuity loss .
- Statins seem to have no effect on the onset or progression of age-related macular degeneration, although the evidence is insufficient .
