Cochrane reviews

  • Intraoperative mitomycin C in trabeculectomy may reduce the risk of surgical failure in eyes that have undergone no previous surgery and in eyes at high risk of failure .
  • Surgical or pharmacological treatment of normal tension glaucoma may be effective in preventing visual field loss, but treatment may increase the risk of cataract formation .
  • In people with newly diagnosed open angle glaucoma, the risk of uncontrolled intraocular pressure seems to be higher when medical treatment is instituted compared to laser trabeculoplasty but this evidence does not include any of the more recently introduced medications .
  • Treatment of patients with intraocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma is effective in preventing visual field defects and deterioration of the optic disk .
  • Beta radiation-augmented trabeculectomy appears to reduce the risk of surgical failure but increase the risk of cataract compared to standard trabeculectomy .
  • There is insufficient evidence to advocate any particular intervention for improving adherence to therapy for patients with ocular hypertension or glaucoma .
  • Needling of encapsulated trabeculectomy blebs may not be better than medical treatment in reducing intraocular pressure .
